A Quick Update from the
Mid-America Council
Saturday, June 14, 2008
|
|
The camp will be released to us by the Iowa authorities very soon. The insurance people are requiring (we agree) that the initial tree cutting and demo work be done by professionals for safety and liability reasons.
Meanwhile, we're focusing on the families of the four deceased scouts, the injured and those who were there. All critical and important efforts.
The outpouring of support is overwhelming. I'm managing the offers to help; separating them into those who can offer resources and those who want to spring into action restoring and rebuilding the camp. The generosity is overwhelming. If it was possible, bus loads of Scouts and Scouters would be there today.
Tribute funds for the scouts that died have been set up by the individual families and cannot be part of the Mid-America Council activities although we support them and pray for their success. A fund to rebuild Little Sioux Scout Ranch is also set up and funds are being received for that already. Checks mad to the Mid-America Council with a notation "LSSR" will go right to that fund.
By all accounts we can be proud of the young men who were at Little Sioux Scout Ranch - they acted with courage and honor, just as Scouts should-they were truly heroes. Please share that story with the other Scouters in your area and ask all to keep us in their prayers.
Our Council is asking everyone who is interested to please monitor our website for updates regarding the Little Sioux tragedy. As time allows and information becomes available it will be posted there. This will include any information about potential assistance that will be needed and what to do for those who wish to offer condolences to the families of the Scouters affected. The web address is http://www.mac-bsa.org/.
Thanks again for your concern as we work through this event. Bless you and your work on behalf of the Scouts.

Special Notice!
All Southwest Florida Council Scouters and Scouts .....
Due to the high fire danger affecting the state; open flame fires are not permitted at Camp Miles or Camp Flying Eagle!
|
|
This ban would prevent Scouts from completing Tenderfoot requirement 3 and Second Class requirements 2e, 2f and 2g. However, the National Advancement Committee has approved the substitution, during periods of fire bans only the use of a cook stove or, when no outdoor cooking is allowed, completion of these requirements over a kitchen stove. Please appreciate the importance of these exceptions to Scouts and leaders currently working on these requirements.
These substitutions are allowed only during periods of fire bans.
Thank you for your support of the Scouting program.

National News:
Youth Protection & Criminal Background Checks
As dedicated BSA volunteers, you understand the importance of keeping our youth safe in the Scouting program. To ensure Youth Protection, our organization has conducted criminal background checks on all new volunteers since April 2003. Because some volunteers have been continually registered in the program before April 2003, some have not had a criminal background check. In the next few moths, we will be communicating with those volunteers on this issue.
Volunteers who have not had a background check will receive a letter from our Chief Scout Executive, Bob Mazzuca, recognizing them as valued volunteers and explaining the need for criminal background checks and our continued youth protection efforts. The letter will explain the need for consent to conduct a criminal background check and direct volunteers to a Web site www.bsacbc.org where volunteers can authorize and provide information needed to conduct a CBC.
